Being able to type Chinese characters is essential for writing messages, emails, and notes.

Most devices let you type using pinyin (拼音 pīnyīn) – the romanization system you're already learning.
dà duō shù shè bèi ràng nǐ yòng pīn yīn lái dǎ zì —— zhè jiù shì nǐ zhèng zài xué de luó mǎ zì mǔ shū rù fǎ 。
大多数设备让你用拼音来打字——这就是你正在学的罗马字母输入法。
Understanding Pinyin Input Methods

A pinyin input method (IME – Input Method Engine) lets you type English letters, then converts them to Chinese characters.
pīn yīn shū rù fǎ （ IME —— shū rù fāng shì yǐn q擎 ） ràng nǐ dǎ yīng wén zì mǔ ， rán hòu bǎ tā men zhuǎn huàn chéng hàn zì 。
拼音输入法（IME——输入方式引擎）让你打英文字母，然后把它们转换成汉字。
For example: Type: ni hao → Appears as: 你好 (hello) Type: xie xie → Appears as: 谢谢 (thank you)
bǐ rú shuō ： dǎ ni hao → chū xiàn ： nǐ hǎo （ nǐ hǎo ） ； dǎ xie xie → chū xiàn ： xiè xie （ xiè xie ） 。
比如说：打 ni hao → 出现：你好（你好）；打 xie xie → 出现：谢谢（谢谢）。
When multiple characters match your pinyin, the app shows options – just tap or number the one you want!

Setting Up on Your Phone

iPhone (iOS): Go to Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards Add Chinese (Simplified) or Chinese (Traditional) Choose "Pinyin" as your input method
iPhone (iOS)：jìn rù shè zhì → tōng yòng → jiàn pán → jiàn pán。tiān jiā jiǎn tǐ zhōng wén huò fán tǐ zhōng wén，xuǎn zé「pīn yīn」zuò wéi shū rù fāng shì。
iPhone (iOS)：进入设置 → 通用 → 键盘 → 键盘。添加简体中文或繁体中文，选择「拼音」作为输入方式。
Android: Download Google Pinyin Input or Sogou Input from your app store.
Android：cóng yìng yòng shāng diàn xià zài gǔ gē pīn yīn shū rù fǎ huò sōu gǒu shū rù fǎ。
Android：从应用商店下载谷歌拼音输入法或搜狗输入法。
Both are free and work excellently.
zhè liǎng ge dōu shì miǎn fèi de，ér qiě dōu hěn hǎo yòng。

Windows: Settings → Time & Language → Language Add Chinese (Simplified or Traditional) Download the Microsoft Pinyin IME Switch between languages using Windows + Spacebar
Windows：shè zhì → shí jiān hé yǔ yán → yǔ yán。tiān jiā jiǎn tǐ zhōng wén huò fán tǐ zhōng wén，xià zài wēi ruǎn pīn yīn shū rù fǎ。shǐ yòng Windows + kōng gé jiàn qiē huàn yǔ yán。
Windows：设置 → 时间和语言 → 语言。添加简体中文或繁体中文，下载微软拼音输入法。使用 Windows + 空格键切换语言。
Mac: System Preferences → Keyboard → Input Sources Add Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese Select "Pinyin – Simplified" or "Pinyin – Traditional" Switch using Ctrl + Spacebar
Mac：xì tǒng piān hào shè zhì → jiàn pán → shū rù yuán。tiān jiā jiǎn tǐ zhōng wén huò fán tǐ zhōng wén，xuǎn zé「pīn yīn - jiǎn tǐ」huò「pīn yīn - fán tǐ」。shǐ yòng Ctrl + kōng gé jiàn qiē huàn。
Mac：系统偏好设置 → 键盘 → 输入源。添加简体中文或繁体中文，选择「拼音 - 简体」或「拼音 - 繁体」。使用 Ctrl + 空格键切换。
Pro Tips for Faster Typing Use abbreviations: Type just the first letter of each syllable.
kuài sù dǎ zì de xiǎo tiē shi：shǐ yòng suō xiě。zhǐ xū shū rù měi ge yīn jié de shǒu zì mǔ。
快速打字的小贴士：使用缩写。只需输入每个音节的首字母。
For "你好" (nǐ hǎo), you can type nh instead of the full pinyin.
bǐ rú「nǐ hǎo」(nǐ hǎo)，nǐ kě yǐ shū rù nh dài tì wán zhěng de pīn yīn。
比如「你好」(nǐ hǎo)，你可以输入 nh 代替完整的拼音。
Learn common phrases: Words like 谢谢 (xièxie), 对不起 (duìbù qǐ), and 没关系 (méi guānxi) appear quickly as you type.
xué xí cháng jiàn duǎn yǔ：xiàng「xièxie」(xièxie)、「duìbù qǐ」(duìbù qǐ) hé「méi guānxi」(méi guānxi) zhè yàng de cí yǔ zài nǐ shū rù shí huì hěn kuài chū xiàn。
学习常见短语：像「谢谢」(xièxie)、「对不起」(duìbù qǐ) 和「没关系」(méi guānxi) 这样的词语在你输入时会很快出现。
Practice regularly: The more you type, the better your IME learns your preferences.
