不必 is used to express that a certain action is unnecessary or not required.

Explanation (解释 jiěshì)

The adverb 不必 (búbì) means "need not" or "unnecessary." It is used to advise someone that an action is not required or is superfluous. Common mistakes

  • Wrong:你不要送我了。
    Correct:你不必送我了。

不要 means "don't" and expresses prohibition; 不必 means "don't need to" and indicates lack of necessity, which is milder and more polite.

  • Wrong:昨天我不必上班。
    Correct:我昨天本不必上班。

不必 is used for the present/future. For the past, 本不必 (originally unnecessary) can be used to express something that didn't need to happen.
