Used to express that something almost happened (but did not), or almost did not happen (but did).

差点(儿) is used to express that something almost happened. The meaning varies slightly depending on whether you wanted the outcome or not.

For undesired outcomes: 差点(儿) + Verb means something almost happened but fortunately did not. Example: 我差点儿迟到 (I almost arrived late) → in reality, not late.
For desired outcomes: 差点(儿) + 没 + Verb means something almost didn't happen but fortunately did. Example: 我差点儿没赶上车 (I almost missed the bus) → in reality, caught the bus.

我今天差点儿迟到了。
繁: 我今天差點兒遲到了。Wǒ jīntiān chàdiǎnr chídào le.
I almost arrived late today.
他开车差点儿撞到树。
繁: 他開車差點兒撞到樹。Tā kāichē chàdiǎnr zhuàng dào shù.
He nearly hit a tree while driving.
还好，我差点儿没赶上火车。
繁: 還好，我差點兒沒趕上火車。Hái hǎo, wǒ chàdiǎnr méi gǎn shàng huǒchē.
Fortunately, I almost missed the train.
这次考试我差点儿就及格了。
繁: 這次考試我差點兒就及格了。Zhè cì kǎoshì wǒ chàdiǎnr jiù jígé le.
I almost passed the exam this time.
刚才差点儿摔倒，吓死我了！
繁: 剛才差點兒摔倒，嚇死我了！Gāngcái chàdiǎnr shuāidǎo, xià sǐ wǒ le!
I almost fell down just now, scared me to death!

Wrong:我差点儿迟到了，所以被老师骂了。
Correct:我差点儿迟到，还好最后赶上了。
差点儿迟到 means 'nearly late', that is, ultimately not late. The second clause must be consistent with this result.
Wrong:我差点儿及格了，真高兴！
Correct:我差点儿没及格，真险！
差点儿及格 means 'almost passed', that is, failed. To express 'almost didn't pass but ultimately did pass', use 差点儿没及格.
