差点(儿) is used to express that something almost happened. The meaning varies slightly depending on whether you wanted the outcome or not.

  • For undesired outcomes: 差点(儿) + Verb means something almost happened but fortunately did not. Example: 我差点儿迟到 (I almost arrived late) → in reality, not late.
  • For desired outcomes: 差点(儿) + 没 + Verb means something almost didn't happen but fortunately did. Example: 我差点儿没赶上车 (I almost missed the bus) → in reality, caught the bus.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong:我差点儿迟到了,所以被老师骂了。
    Correct:我差点儿迟到,还好最后赶上了。

    差点儿迟到 means 'nearly late', that is, ultimately not late. The second clause must be consistent with this result.

  • Wrong:我差点儿及格了,真高兴!
    Correct:我差点儿没及格,真险!

    差点儿及格 means 'almost passed', that is, failed. To express 'almost didn't pass but ultimately did pass', use 差点儿没及格.
