Used to connect two clauses, expressing strong concession with the meaning of 'even so', 'nevertheless'.
Explanation (解释 jiěshì)
This phrase is used to connect two clauses, conveying a strong sense of concession. The first clause states a fact or a situation that has occurred. 即便如此 (even so, even then) introduces the second clause, asserting that the result or situation remains unchanged despite what was mentioned before. This phrase is fairly formal, commonly used in written language or contexts that call for a serious tone.

- 他工作很辛苦。即便如此，他也没放弃。繁: 他工作很辛苦。即便如此，他也沒放棄。Tā gōngzuò hěn xīnkǔ. Jíbiàn rúcǐ, tā yě méi fàngqì.
He works very hard. Even so, he did not give up.

Common mistakes
- Wrong:即便如此，他很累。Correct:他工作了一整天。即便如此，他也不觉得累。
即便如此 requires a preceding clause so that 如此 (like this/so) has a referent to point to; it cannot stand alone.
