The conjunction 进而 connects two actions or situations, expressing a further progression from the former to the latter.
Explanation (解释 jiěshì)
进而 (jìn'ér) is a formal conjunction used to express progression or deepening from a previously stated action or situation. The first clause establishes a foundation, and the second clause introduced by 进而 indicates a further step or more profound outcome.
It is similar to "from there," "going a step further," or "and then" in meaning, but carries a more formal tone and emphasizes logical progression, rather than mere chronological sequence as with 然后.

Common mistakes
- Wrong:我先吃饭，进而看电视。Correct:我先吃饭，然后看电视。
进而 is used for deeper development, not ordinary chains of actions. For everyday matters, use 然后.
- Wrong:他学习很好，进而很帅。Correct:他学习很好，而且很帅。
进而 indicates progression and cannot be used to list parallel features; 而且 (moreover, and also) would be more appropriate in this case.
