The auxiliary verb 可以 (kěyǐ) has two main meanings:

  • Asking for and granting permission: This is the most common usage. You use it to ask "May I...?" or to respond "You may...".
  • Expressing possibility or situational permissibility: Used to say that something is feasible or permitted under certain rules or circumstances. For example, "Parking is allowed here."
