The adverb 偏偏 (piānpiān) is used to emphasize that something happens contrary to one's wishes, intentions, or what would normally be expected, often carrying a tone of frustration or helplessness.

It has two main meanings:

  • Contrary to one's wishes (unfortunate): 我想出门,天偏偏下雨了。 (I wanted to go out, but it just had to rain.)
  • Deliberately doing the opposite: 妈妈不让他去,他偏偏要去。 (His mother wouldn't let him go, yet he insisted on going anyway.)

Common mistakes

  • Wrong:我喜欢苹果,他偏偏喜欢香蕉。
