…的话

HSK 5
  • Conditionals

Structure (结构 jiégòu)

(如果/要是)Conditional clause的话, Main clause

Meaning (意思 yìsi)

Use `…的话` at the end of a clause to express a hypothesis, equivalent to "if…" in English.

Explanation (解释 jiěshì)

的话 is a phrase placed at the end of a conditional clause to emphasize "if that situation occurs...". It makes sentences softer and more natural, and is very common in spoken language. It can be used alone, or combined with other conditional words such as 如果 (rúguǒ) or 要是 (yàoshi) at the beginning of the clause for greater clarity. The clause containing 的话 always precedes the main clause expressing the result.

  • Wrong:如果你不来,我就自己去的话。
    Correct:如果你不来的话,我就自己去。

的话 is used to end a hypothetical clause and should never be placed at the end of the result clause.
