Meaning (意思 yìsi)
The structure 只有…才… is used to express the necessary and only condition for something to occur.
Explanation (解释 jiěshì)
The structure 只有…才… (only if… then…) is used to emphasize a sole and necessary condition that must be met for a certain result to occur. 只有 precedes the conditional clause, while 才 precedes the verb or result clause.
In other words, without this condition, the result cannot come about. This is a key distinction from 只要…就… (as long as… then…).

- 只有努力学习，才能考好。繁: 只有努力學習，才能考好。Zhǐyǒu nǔlì xuéxí, cáinéng kǎo hǎo.
Only by studying hard can one do well on the exam.

Common mistakes
- Wrong:如果努力学习，才能考好。Correct:只有努力学习，才能考好。
如果 merely expresses a hypothesis "if," while 只有 emphasizes that this is the only and necessary condition.
- Wrong:只有你帮助我，我能完成。Correct:只有你帮助我，我才能完成。
只有 and 才 form a pair; 才 cannot be omitted to connect with the result. 才 emphasizes that the result only occurs when that condition is present.
