Meaning (意思 yìsi)

Conjunction 鉴于 is used to introduce the reason or basis for a decision or action, and carries a formal register.

Explanation (解释 jiěshì)

鉴于 (jiànyú) is a formal conjunction used to introduce the reason or background for an action or conclusion. It is equivalent to "given that," "in view of," or "on the basis of" in English. This structure commonly appears in written language, news, or official announcements to make arguments more rigorous and well-founded.

  1. 鉴于天气不好,我们取消了活动。
    繁: 鑑於天氣不好,我們取消了活動。Jiànyú tiānqì hǎo, wǒmen qǔxiāo le huódòng.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong:鉴于我饿了,我们去吃饭吧。
    Correct:因为我饿了,我们去吃饭吧。

    鉴于 is too formal for everyday situations. In spoken language, using 因为 (yīnwèi) would be much more natural.

  • Wrong:我们取消了活动,鉴于天气不好。
    Correct:鉴于天气不好,我们取消了活动。

    A clause with 鉴于 always stands at the beginning of a sentence to introduce a reason or context first, and should not be placed at the end of the sentence.
