Verb下来

Meaning (意思 yìsi)

Used after a verb to indicate an action moving from top to bottom, or a state becoming fixed or settled.

Explanation (解释 jiěshì)

The directional complement 下来 has two main meanings:

  1. Literal meaning: Movement from a higher place to a lower place. For example: 走下来 (walk down), 跳下来 (jump down).
  2. Figurative meaning: Describes an action or state that gradually becomes stable, fixed, or recorded. This usage is more common at advanced levels. For example: 停下来 (stop and stay still), 安静下来 (become quiet), 记下来 (write/note down). It can also indicate something passed down from the past to the present.
