Verb + 过去 (directional)
HSK 5- Complements
Structure (结构 jiégòu)
Meaning (意思 yìsi)
Used after a verb to indicate movement away from the speaker or passing through a certain point.
Explanation (解释 jiěshì)
The directional complement 过去 combines two elements: 过 (to pass, to cross) and 去 (to go, moving away from the speaker). It describes a movement away from the speaker's position, typically passing by some reference point.
Beyond its literal sense of physical movement, 过去 also has figurative uses, such as 晕过去 (to faint, to lose consciousness) or 挺过去 (to get through a difficult period).

Common mistakes
- Wrong:朋友在那边,我走过来找他。Correct:朋友在那边,我走过去找他。
Friends are over there (far from the speaker), so you must use `走过去` (go over there), not `走过来` (come over here).
- Wrong:他太激动,晕了过去。Correct:他太激动,晕过去了。
`晕过去` is a fixed phrase and cannot be split by inserting `了` between `晕` and `过去`; `了` should be placed at the end of the sentence.
