要不是…
HSK 5- Conditionals
Structure (结构 jiégòu)
Meaning (意思 yìsi)
要不是 is used to express a hypothetical contrary to fact, meaning "if it were not for… then…".
Explanation (解释 jiěshì)
The structure 要不是... is used to present a hypothetical situation contrary to reality, carrying the meaning "if it weren't for... then...". The first clause (containing 要不是) states something that actually happened. The second clause describes a hypothetical outcome — something that would have (nearly) occurred had it not been for the fact stated in the first clause. The second clause is often accompanied by 就, 已经, or 可能 to emphasize the hypothetical result.

Common mistakes
- Wrong:要不是他很高,他打篮球。Correct:要不是他很高,他就打不了篮球。
The second clause must express a hypothetical result contrary to fact, typically connected with `就` to show what 'did not happen' or 'would be different'.
- Wrong:要不是你帮了我,我就完了。Correct:要不是你帮忙,我就完了。
In the construction `要不是`, 了 is typically not used after the verb because the focus is on stating a condition, not recounting a completed action.
