Meaning (意思 yìsi)

Used to express two different actions performed simultaneously by the same subject.

Explanation (解释 jiěshì)

The structure 一边…一边… is equivalent to "while… at the same time…" in English, used to express that someone is doing two things simultaneously. Importantly, both actions must be performed by the same person.

In colloquial speech, is sometimes omitted, leaving just 边…边…, but the meaning remains unchanged. For example: 他边吃饭边看电视。

  1. 他一边吃饭一边看电视。
    繁: 他一邊吃飯一邊看電視。 yībiān chīfàn yībiān kàn diànshì.

    He ate while watching television.

  2. 我喜欢一边听音乐一边做作业。
    繁: 我喜歡一邊聽音樂一邊做作業。 xǐhuān yībiān tīng yīnyuè yībiān zuò zuòyè.

    I like to listen to music while doing homework.

  3. 她一边走路一边打电话。
    繁: 她一邊走路一邊打電話。 yībiān zǒulù yībiān diànhuà.

    She walked while talking on the phone.

  4. 别一边开车一边玩手机!
    繁: 別一邊開車一邊玩手機!Bié yībiān kāichē yībiān wán shǒujī!

    Don't drive while playing with your phone!

  5. 我们一边喝咖啡一边聊天儿。
    繁: 我們一邊喝咖啡一邊聊天兒。Wǒmen yībiān kāfēi yībiān liáotiānr.

    We chatted while drinking coffee.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong:我一边吃饭,妈妈一边做饭。
    Correct:我吃饭的时候,妈妈在做饭。

    This structure requires two actions to be performed by the same subject; it cannot be used for two different people.

  • Wrong:他吃饭一边看电视。
    Correct:他一边吃饭一边看电视。

    Both instances of `一边` must be used to form the parallel structure; one side cannot be omitted.
