因此 is a conjunction (连词) used to express a result or consequence in a formal register. It means "therefore," "thus," or "as a result."
Compared to 所以, 因此 is more commonly used in written language, speeches, or situations requiring formality, emphasizing a tight logical relationship between cause and effect. The clause containing the cause is typically stated in full before 因此 is used to introduce the conclusion.

Common mistakes
- Wrong:我饿了,因此想吃饭。Correct:我饿了,所以想吃饭。
因此 is formal and used in written language or formal situations; 所以 is more natural for everyday speech.
- Wrong:因为天气不好,因此我们没去。Correct:天气不好,因此我们没去。
因此 already contains the meaning "for that reason," so 因为 is usually unnecessary in the same complex sentence. It is better to separate them into two distinct clauses.
