Meaning (意思 yìsi)

Used to shift to a new topic related to the current one, equivalent to "as for…", "regarding…".

Explanation (解释 jiěshì)

The conjunction 至于 is used to introduce a new topic that must be related to the one just mentioned. It is equivalent to expressions such as "as for…" or "regarding…" in English, allowing for a natural shift in subject matter.

The topic introduced by 至于 is typically a different aspect of, or an issue arising from, the main topic. Note that prior context is required; 至于 cannot be used to open an entirely new conversation.

  1. 我们先讨论工作，至于周末去哪儿玩，以后再说。
    繁: 我們先討論工作，至於週末去哪兒玩，以後再說。Wǒmen xiān tǎolùn gōngzuò, zhìyú zhōumò qù nǎr wán, yǐhòu zài shuō.

    Let's discuss work first, and as for where to go for fun on the weekend, we can talk about that later.

  2. 这件衣服很漂亮，至于价格，我觉得有点贵。
    繁: 這件衣服很漂亮，至於價格，我覺得有點貴。Zhè jiàn yīfu hěn piàoliang, zhìyú jiàgé, wǒ juéde yǒudiǎn guì.

    This piece of clothing is very beautiful, but as for the price, I think it's a bit expensive.

  3. 他工作能力很强，至于性格怎么样，我不太清楚。
    繁: 他工作能力很強，至於性格怎麼樣，我不太清楚。Tā gōngzuò nénglì hěn qiáng, zhìyú xìnggé zěnmeyàng, wǒ bú tài qīngchu.

    His work ability is very strong, but as for what his character is like, I'm not very clear about it.

  4. 去上海的机票已经买了，至于住哪个酒店还没定。
    繁: 去上海的機票已經買了，至於住哪個酒店還沒定。Qù Shànghǎi de jīpiào yǐjīng mǎi le, zhìyú zhù nǎge jiǔdiàn hái méi dìng.

    The plane ticket to Shanghai has already been bought, but we haven't decided which hotel to stay at yet.

  5. 哥哥喜欢踢足球，至于我，我更喜欢打篮球。
    繁: 哥哥喜歡踢足球，至於我，我更喜歡打籃球。Gēge xǐhuān tī zúqiú, zhìyú wǒ, wǒ gèng xǐhuān dǎ lánqiú.

    My older brother likes to play soccer, but as for me, I prefer basketball.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong:至于明天的会议，你准备好了吗？
    Correct:我们先把报告写完。至于明天的会议，你准备好了吗？

    至于 cannot stand at the beginning of a conversation without context. It must be used after a related topic has already been mentioned.

  • Wrong:今天天气很好。至于我的作业，我还没写完。
    Correct:我的作业还没写完，没时间出去玩。

    The two topics "weather" and "homework" are not directly related. 至于 is used to shift to a different aspect of the SAME larger issue.
