Meaning (意思 yìsi)
The structure 除非…才… is used to express the only condition for something to happen, carrying the meaning "only if/when… then…".
Explanation (解释 jiěshì)
The structure 除非…才… is used to emphasize a single, exclusive condition. 除非 (unless/only if) states that condition, and 才 (only then) asserts that the result can occur if and only if that condition is met.
It carries a much stronger meaning than the 如果…就… (if…then…) structure. Think of it as "only this one key can open this lock."

- 除非你努力学习，才能考好。繁: 除非你努力學習，才能考好。Chúfēi nǐ nǔlì xuéxí, cái néng kǎo hǎo.
Unless you study hard, you cannot do well on the exam.
- 除非妈妈同意，我才能出去。繁: 除非媽媽同意，我才能出去。Chúfēi māma tóngyì, wǒ cái néng chūqù.
I can only go out if my mother agrees.
- 除非下雨，我才带伞。繁: 除非下雨，我才帶傘。Chúfēi xià yǔ, wǒ cái dài sǎn.

Common mistakes
- Wrong:除非你道歉，我就原谅你。Correct:除非你道歉，我才原谅你。
才 is required to emphasize the uniqueness of the condition. 就 cannot express the meaning of 'only then'.
- Wrong:我除非你帮助，才能完成。Correct:除非你帮助我，我才能完成。
除非 must stand at the beginning of a conditional clause and cannot be inserted between the subject and verb as it can be in Vietnamese.
