The adverb 多 is used in questions to ask about the degree of a property, such as age, height, or distance. It is equivalent to the structure "how...?" in English.
The most common phrases are 多大 (how big / how old), 多高 (how tall / how high), 多远 (how far), and 多久 (how long).
