Structure (结构 jiégòu)

SubjectVerb什么 (Noun)?

Meaning (意思 yìsi)

The interrogative pronoun 什么 is used to ask about objects or matters, meaning 'what' or 'what thing'.

Explanation (解释 jiěshì)

什么 (shénme) is the most basic interrogative pronoun, used to ask "what?" It can stand alone as an object, or precede a noun to ask more specifically about that noun.

One convenient feature is that the word order in questions using 什么 is identical to that of the answer. You simply replace the piece of information you want to know with 什么.
