The modal particle 而已 is used at the end of a sentence to emphasize that something is merely as stated and nothing more, equivalent to 'only... that's all'.
Explanation (解释 jiěshì)
而已 is a sentence-final modal particle used to emphasize that something is simple, minor, or less significant than one might think. It means "only," "that's all," or "nothing more, nothing less."
This structure often appears together with adverbs such as 只是, 不过, or 就是 before it, to make the sense of "merely" clearer and more natural. For example: 只是...而已.

- 我只是开个玩笑而已。繁: 我只是開個玩笑而已。Wǒ zhǐshì kāi ge wánxiào éryǐ.
I was just joking around.

Common mistakes
- Wrong:我而已会说一点儿中文。Correct:我只会说一点儿中文而已。
而已 is a modal particle that must stand at the end of a sentence; it cannot appear before a verb like the adverb 只.
- Wrong:这是我的看法而已。Correct:这只是我的看法而已。
