Verb + 上去
HSK 5- Complements
Structure (结构 jiégòu)
Meaning (意思 yìsi)
Complement 上去 indicates movement upward and away from the speaker's position.
Explanation (解释 jiěshì)
The directional complement 上去 is used to express movement upward and away from the speaker. 上 means up, while 去 means to go, away.
Imagine you are at the foot of a mountain and tell your friend: "Let's climb up!" (我们爬上去吧!). The action of "climbing up" is directed away from you, toward the mountaintop.
When a place object is present, it typically appears between 上 and 去, for example: 走上楼去 (to go up to the floor above).
Examples (例句 lìjù)(5)

Common mistakes
- Wrong:我在楼上,你快上去!Correct:我在楼上,你快上来!
When the speaker is above and calls someone else up, use 上来 (toward oneself). 上去 means going up and away from oneself.
- Wrong:他跑上去山了。Correct:他跑上山去了。
A locative object (山) typically stands between 上 and 去 to make the sentence more natural.
