Verb + 好

  • Complements

Structure (结构 jiégòu)

SubjectVerb(Object)

Meaning (意思 yìsi)

Resultative complement 好 indicates that an action has been completed satisfactorily or is ready for the next step.

Explanation (解释 jiěshì)

When placed after a verb, functions as a resultative complement and no longer carries the meaning of "good" or "well." It expresses two main ideas:

  • The action has been completed fully and satisfactorily. For example: 做好 (finish doing), 写好 (finish writing).
  • The action is done and everything is ready for what comes next. For example: 准备好 (finish preparing, be ready), 买好 (finish buying, have it on hand).

Common mistakes

  • Wrong:我好准备了。
    Correct:我准备好了。

好 is a resultative complement and must come immediately after the verb, not before it.

  • Wrong:他说好。
    Correct:他说得很好。

To describe degree or manner (speaking well), use the structure "V + 得 + 很 + Adj". "说好" means "to agree on" or "to settle on".
